Hi, I’m Victoria.
Often people ask me what ‘Pommie’ means and where my blog name comes from. In Australia & New Zealand Pom, Pommie or Pommy is a slang term for a British person.
There are several theories as to the origin of the word Pommie. Many people think it comes from the acronym POHM- Prisoner Of Her Majesty- which was apparently emblazoned on the back of immigrants uniforms when they arrived. But is actually it also likely that it was an abbreviation of the word pomegranate and referred to the flush complexion of Brits (like a pomegranate’s flesh).
I met a lot of Australians when I started travelling and some of them nicknamed me Pommie. Despite some dictionaries on the Internet claiming it to be a derogatory term, it has always been used by my friends in a very affectionate way.
Who Am I?
I grew up in Manchester, England. When I’m travelling I mostly get “So you support Manchester United!!” Yes, yes I do. I was there to watch the bus come home when we won the treble. Thanks to my close proximity to Europe I got to go to some pretty cool countries growing up and I had always thought to myself “Imagine if I could just stay and not go home.” Thus my travel addiction was born.
Why The Blog?
In 2008 I graduated with a 2:1 (Hons) degree in Broadcast Journalism and thought, what next? All the way through school I had listened to teachers telling me the importance of good grades and getting a reliable job straight out of uni. I was a straight-A student and top of my class. However I soon realised that in the real world, being a straight-A student didn’t automatically grant me the right to a job. At 21 I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to take. Not everyone knows exactly what they want to do. and I graduated at the height of the financial crisis, when few companies were actually hiring . Not everyone knows exactly what they want to do.
Then it dawned on me that I didn’t have to conform to society, that maybe I could live my dreams. What I wanted to do was be happy, live life and see and do everything in the world, so that’s exactly what I set out to do.
I worked a bar job for a couple of months so I could go on one big 2-and-a-half month trip by myself around Australia but on returning home I realised that I was so passionate about travelling that I wanted to do more of it.
I decided that if I followed my dreams and focused on something I enjoy, I would eventually find the right path. I moved to Bali in 2009 and while I was there I began writing this blog. I had always loved writing, and this gave me the chance to do it!
Eventually I left Bali because I entered a video competition organized by World Nomads and won a once-in-a-lifetime road trip around South Australia. After that I went to Portugal and worked a summer there while building this blog. At the end of 2010 I became a full-time, self-employed travel blogger and freelancer.
A lot of bloggers will tell you how they quit their jobs, sold all their belongings and went on a trip around the world. I didn’t. In the beginning I travelled with hardly any money in the bank and I had the time of my life staying in hostels. I worked temporary bar jobs, then eventually started making enough money from blogging to make it my full-time career.
Fast forward to 2019 and I now run my own business, Far and Away Media. At one point I loved the idea of endless travel but eventually I felt like I needed some roots. I wanted friends that live close by; I wanted a home. I moved to London and now I live in New York.
Why New York you ask? Well, honestly it was my dream ever since I was a kid to go to the US. I always felt like America was calling my name and now I’m here. I work on my websites. I do influencer photography. I dabble in investing. I have my favourite brunch spots. I still love to travel but I prefer to take shorter trips and enjoy a bit more comfort.
I will always be a traveller at heart but as I’ve grown older, my travel style has evolved with me.
Where Have I Been?
So far I have travelled to 54+ countries including Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Israel, Singapore, Indonesia, Tunisia, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain, Croatia, France, Monaco, Portugal, Morocco, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Slovenia, Austria, the Dominican Republic, Poland, Madagascar, Montenegro, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Ireland, The Philippines and the USA.
The first question people usually ask me is ‘What’s your favourite country?’ That’s an extremely tough one! I love visiting the US and I’m happy to be here. I also really love Portugal, Montenegro, Greece and Cape Town.
